Sherweb raises Hosted Exchange mailbox size
November 20, 2006
Well it’s supposed to be news that Sherweb raised their Exchange mailbox size to 1.25 GB. As noted earlier in the week, BlueTie, while not Exchange but an Exchange alternative offers 5 GB for free and 10GB for almost half the price of Sherwebs 1.25 GB. Are companies keeping mailbox sizes low in order to make it a selling point? I mean all the features are the same, they need something to claim differentiation on right? This is why competitors like BlueTie, Zimbra, Hyperoffice and others have an advantage, they’ll be adding new features and functions at a far greater pace than Exchange. You’ll get, in fact with some you can already get, more features for less money than Hosted Exchange.

I don’t agree.
Small players who offer alternative systems tend to oversell disk space in order to gain marketshare.
Disk space decreased in price but it’s not free yet… so without a potential ad revenue “a la gmail”, these 5 gigs for free are not a viable option longterm wise.
If your company is used to Microsoft products (80% of corporate emails are read with outlook), then MS Exchange is a valid option.
I don’t know which features or functions you’re talking about but I’m sure you haven’t made a full comparison of these collaborative email systems.

Hi Rob, Thanks for commenting. I would agree with you that if a company (speaking primarily about small to mid-sized businesses) is using Exchange in-house Hosted Exchange is definately a better value.
On the 5G, “Free” is relative. You are, of course, right that there has to be some way to monetize the product. So I would agree with your assessment if qualified by saying that 5G for free is only viable long term if there is an alternate way to monetize the product.
Thanks again for you input.

I have to point out that the BlueTie Free version has no text or banner ads whatsoever. The 5GB total storage is per user and each free account can have up to 20 users, in effect offering 100GB of storage per account. It also supports domains and has administrative tools for managing the account for a business. These distinguish BlueTie from gmail, hotmail and other free offerings.
We monetize by adding integrated third party services, in the context of our application. You will be able to book travel in your calendar via Orbitz, send a fax via Efax, book dinner resevations and much more. Our partners pay us per transaction and costs the user are no different than going to the partner’s websites. You don’t see ads and you can always ignore the services.
